You have a product idea. Is this a real opportunity—or just a distraction?

Most product ideas sound reasonable in isolation. The real question is whether your organization is positioned to make the idea succeed. The goal is not to green-light ideas prematurely, but to identify where additional learning, validation, or investment is required before committing serious resources.

The Idea Reality Check is a quick self-assessment designed to surface risk across three areas that consistently determine success or failure: market familiarity, internal capabilities, and competitive context. It doesn’t judge the quality of the idea itself. Instead, it evaluates whether you have the experience, evidence, and readiness required to turn the idea into a viable product.

For the product idea you’re evaluating, answer the following questions. If the answer is unclear, choose Unknown. Uncertainty is valuable input—it highlights where risk still exists.
